To be honest, I never planned to have a dog. Toby came to me after a messy breakup—my best friend shoved him into my arms and said, “You need someone who’ll force you to leave the house.”
I barely acknowledged him at first. But Toby would sit silently beside my drawing desk, waiting for me to finish a piece. He’d hum softly, tail rhythmically tapping the floor.
When I got frustrated, ready to throw my tablet against the wall, he’d bring over my plush pillow, drop it in my lap, and gently rest his head on my knee.
He never tried to “fix” my sadness.
He just sat with it.
After a while, I developed a habit—nap breaks on the couch. Every time I flopped down, Toby would climb up, nudge my cheek with his nose, and wait until I laughed.
He seemed to know when I needed a break… and when I needed strength.
Thank you Toby.
